Difference between ACU's and BDU's

Would someone be kind enough to explain the difference between ACU's and BDU's and which one you prefer and why. I've always worn BDU's and was just curious what the difference was with the ACU's.

Thanks in advance for the answers.

Re: Difference between ACU's and BDU's

ACU is the Armys Camo pattern / and cut of material. ( Army Combat Uniform )

BDU's are the old school term for most military camo uniforms. (Battle Dresss Uniform )

now with every branch having their OWN pattern to distinguish....BDU is reffering to the old "woodland" pattern really.

ACU = Army
MARPAT = Marine
etc. etc.

Re: Difference between ACU's and BDU's

All patterns aside, the ACU cut is quite different from the generic BDU cut.

The ACU cut (not necessarily pattern) has mandarin collar on the jacket, different layouts/positions for the pockets, slanted pockets instead of the standard pockets on the BDU's, and generally velcro areas for placement of patches, etc. If you go to BDU.COM - Military Uniforms & Tactical Clothing by Propper and enter "Multicam" (without the quotes) in the search bar, they will have Multicam unis in both the ACU cut and the BDU cut. You can compare them from there.

Correct. Generally the term ACU is the (Army Combat Uniform). But like Big Daddy said you can find some other patterns that are tailored in the ACU style cut and design. For example I were the multicam pattern but it's taylored and cut to the ACU style with velcor pockets. You can also buy mulicam in the (BDU) taylor styled cut. When your looking on line for the item description, look for what style it's taylored in. If you look at OPSGEARS web site under clothing they give a good example of diffrent pattern uniforms but in the ACU tailored cut and style.

Re: Difference between ACU's and BDU's

Atlanco makes TRU (Tactical Response Uniforms) in the ACU tailored style, and they come in many different variations of U.S. camouflage. You can find many of these on OPSGEAR.com. I own TRUs in Multicam, MARPAT Woodland, and Woodland. I definatley prefer ACUs/TRUs to BDUs because of more pocket space, and the velcro on the sleeves allows easy application of patches. I also like the Mandarin collar for paintball because it provides good neck protection.

Re: Difference between ACU's and BDU's

well i just wanted to give a point of veiw from the military and if any other military can help me out here too ........the ACU was not our first choice in uniform origanally it was supposed to be the multicam but somehow it got through(details that would take forever to explain) and now we have ACUs it is a patern taht is supposed to not really blend in to enything but sortof blend in... i kno it makes no freaking sence but yet that is what it is for - it is more of a urban terrain camo and honestly i absoluty hate it it blends into nothing and stands out like a soar thumb ....and i dont kno about where you get your uniforms from but the ones issued to us are complete (doo doo) the velcro is the worst ever it is not quiet or tactical in eny envoirnment and they fade really quick (avarage life of 6mo) i mean i can just go on and on about them but if you like them go for it all i can say is i miss haveing the old BDUs that was a real uniform!!

Re: Difference between ACU's and BDU's

I just wish they made a tactical responce uniform in tiger stripe. That would be sweet. I like the lay out of the ACU cut, but it's way to expensive for me.

Re: Difference between ACU's and BDU's

I like the TAC.U style which can be found a few places, its more of a law enforcement/swat style which is a little more comfortable and accessible for every day use. Also gives good neck coverage and tucks well.

Re: Difference between ACU's and BDU's

i find the style/cut is nice but you might wanna try and get a TRU type. Like someone stated before the military with there lowest bidder wins means normally quality is good enough to spend a week of bootcamp learning to fix it. I do like Marpat. but overall OD green just rocks. For some reason i blend better with it.

Re: Difference between ACU's and BDU's

The ACU uses the RAID cut, while regular woodlands/tri-color/choco-chip BDUs use the regular cut, as Big Daddy said.

Demand for tiger stripe isn't very high anymore, so your best bet would be sewing the pockets on yourself or giving them to a tailor to do them for you.
